On Monday, September 29, about 65 people attended a talk in Victor Harbor on author Daphne du Maurier and film director Alfred Hitchcock.
The talk, hosted by ArtsNational Fleurieu, was by visiting UK film director and art lecturer John Francis, who focused on the compelling and emotional stories told by du Maurier and how these were transformed into iconic psychological thrillers by Hitchcock.
These works included ‘Jamaica Inn’, ‘Rebecca’ and ‘The Birds’.
Despite the international acclaim of this collaboration, du Maurier and Hitchcock never actually met.
Du Maurier was known as a romantic author, but this overlooked the often dark and sinister storylines in her books, with hints of the supernatural.
Hitchcock focused on the fears and struggles of his characters and was highly experimental in the way he created suspense and shock.
He was also renowned for his own cameo scenes in many of his movies.
ArtsNational Fleurieu’s final lecture of the year is by archaeologist and expert on ancient cultures, Eileen Goulding.
Her talk is entitled ‘The Influential Queens of Egypt’, which will be at 10.30am on Monday, October 27 at the Gospel Centre, Victor Harbor.
