Fall in love with nature this Valentine’s Day

The Fleurieu Peninsula has incredible natural beauty everywhere you look, making it the perfect setting for a romantic experience this Valentine’s Day.

Here are three spectacular views you should consider checking out for a memorable Valentine’s Day experience.

WAITPINGA CLIFFS

Why go to Scotland to see their cliffs, when you could see Waitpinga’s?

Walk along the Heysen Trail, breathe in the salty sea air, and enjoy a picnic lunch at one of the many benches with endless views.

Located in the Newland Head Conservation Park, there is a range of special animals and vegetation you can discover.

Keep an eye out for white-bellied sea-eagles – one of just a few breeding pairs of sea-eagles on the mainland inhabit the cliffs here, according to Walking SA.

If you are up for adventure, one of the trails along the cliffs takes you to Kings Beach.

It is an 11.5km walk one-way on undulating terrain and is described as ‘moderate’ difficulty – expect to take four to six hours one way.

RAPID BAY

What’s more romantic than a secluded beach you can only access by boat?

A trip to Rapid Bay starts off with a steep, scenic drive into the town, where rolling hills meet the ocean.

When you are down on the beach, you are surrounded by hills and cliffs.

There is a long jetty to take a romantic stroll down at sunset, to fish off of, or to snorkel or dive around to explore the underwater world.

It is here you can find the renowned leafy sea dragon.

The water is a great location to stand-up paddle board, and if you want to access the secluded beach, bring a kayak, canoe, or boat – and a picnic to share.

KUITPO FOREST

If the sea is not your thing, then a calm couple of hours in Kuitpo Forest Reserve is the perfect choice.

Kuitpo Forest is expansive but it provides an intimate setting, where you can immerse yourself in a special environment but not feel isolated.

There is a range of activities that you can do within the reserve including bushwalking, hiking, running, bike riding, horse riding, fossicking, orienteering and rogaining.

During autumn there is a spectacular golden light that peeks through the towering trees, making a lovely setting for some cute couple photos.

Enjoying the peace and quiet of the forest while observing the nature around you is a great way to slow down and have quality time together.

PORT WILLUNGA

Imagine watching the sun set over the ocean from the relative privacy of a cave hand-carved into the cliff face.

This is exactly what you can do at Port Willunga.

Many years ago, fishers carved out caves in Port Willunga’s cliffs to store their boats and nets, and now they have become little nooks to shelter from the sun and feel protected.

Anywhere on the western Fleurieu coastline is a beautiful place to watch the sunset, but Port Willunga is one of the best spots.

It’s another great swimming location and also interesting for snorkelling and diving, as the wreck of the Star of Greece is here – but it can be even be seen from out of the water when it is low tide.

The old jetty was destroyed in 1915 and only a handful of weather-beaten pylons remain; these are a point of interest for photographers and artists, and set the Port Willunga scenery apart from the rest of the coastline.
