Build inclusion in business

While many businesses are open to making their workplaces more inclusive, sometimes they simply don’t know where to start.

Supported by the Australian Government Department of Social Services, SYC has launched the Tourism Local Navigator Project, an initiative aimed at building the capacity of small/medium-sized tourism businesses to enhance their confidence and capability to attract, engage and retain people living with disability in the workplace.

The project provides tourism and related businesses, at no cost, additional support via a Workforce Inclusion Navigator who works individually with businesses to understand their workplace needs and improve their access and inclusion practices.

“1 in 6 people live with disability – by removing barriers, businesses can create an inclusive environment, making them more accessible and welcoming for employees and customers,” Workforce Inclusion Navigator Liz Curr said.

One Fleurieu business creating an inclusive workplace is Beach Road Wines.

By adopting inclusive work practices they add value to their workplace culture, enhance business opportunities and improve access to a broader talent pool.

Disability-inclusive businesses grow profits more than four times faster than their peers, employees with disability stay on the job four months longer on average than those without disability and people with disability have 34 per cent fewer accidents than other employees.

“This project offers ongoing support to grow and support one of your biggest investments: your human resources,” Liz said.
